CCC LEGACY CHAPTER 123

Event 2018

CCC Boy Reunion at Longhorn Caverns State Park,

(location of the only CCC Museum in Texas)

19-21 October, 2018

This excursion is chocked full of fun and history. We intend to visit the sight of an 1849 frontier fort in Burnet, Tx. Fort Croghan was third in a multitude of Army Forts strategically placed to protect settlers from Native American aggression during the push westward in Texas. These forts, of which Fort Worth was one, chained from the Red River to the Rio Grande.

While there, we’ll tour the Fort Croghan Museum. We can see rare photos and artifacts from the time the boys were working the area.

Then on Saturday our field trip to the Longhorn Cavern State Park is going to be spectacular. The tour of the cavern lasts about an hour. Although the physical requirement for the cavern tour is moderately light, participants need to be able to traverse 50 steps down into the cavern and back up to the entrance at the end. There is no wheelchair or walker access for the tour.

We’ll see where the boys of CCC Co. 854 cleared the cavern of debris and built the facilities and byways of the park in the 1930’s. The original administration building is an extraordinary example of the parkitecture that was standard operational procedure for the CCC.

Look forward to seeing you there.
