The Village

Posted by RUAVET on June 20, 2019 at 9:05 AM Comments comments (2)

I will only speak for CCC Legacy Chapter 123, though, apparently national is going through the same. A serious decline in activity and support of the Civilian Conservation Corps, 1933-1942. A program that many of our Dads, Grand Dads, Uncles, Brothers, Family and Friends were enrolled. A hand full of folks can not continue to share the load to keep their memories alive. It is said that it takes a village to raise the child. CCC Legacy Inc and CCC Legacy Chapter 123 is our child, so to speak. We need the village to help.

Many continue to enjoy their accomplishments, yet only a few continue to support the beliefs and efforts of Our Legacy. Some folks have lost interest. How can one lose interest in friends and family? I don't understand. Some use the political times of today to separate themselves from a program that they love . I don't understand. Personally, I'm probably one of the harder folks to get along with when it comes to the CCC Legacy. But I, and the few will continue to support. As stated it takes a village. Put the petty differences (personal opinion) aside and let's get the village back to support the Boys of the CCC.

The following notes are current issues and events of CCC Legacy Chapter 123;

1) the Buffalo Boogie, 12 May, 2018 at the FWNC&R. The chapter members present suggested we support this endeavor again this year. Two sites. One at the entrance close to the gate. Site 2 at the refectory overlook, as we had in 2017. The chapter now has a large tent, similar to the one used last year, which needs a replacement tarp for the top and tie downs.

A replacement tarp and tie downs will be on the agenda, 14 April, 2018.

2

A number of support personnel and members of CCC Legacy Chapter 123 are not available to support this chapter event due to prior arrangements and changing of the minds.

Mike Pixler, President

CCC Legacy Chapter 123

Dear Mike,

As you are undoubtedly aware, Buffalo Boogie would not be the same with out CCC representation.

I am hoping I might be able to entice you to participate as a vendor at this year's Buffalo Boogie, its 26th anniversary.

Yours has always been a wonderful booth and last year's special second "booth" site at the Broadview overlook site was special.

Attached is the invitation letter with accompanying application form. If your group can provide the same large tent for Broadview site,

we'll only charge you for the smaller site in your usual site just inside the entrance gate. We'll not have any problem providing chairs and tables.

I haven't seen the commemorative  T-shirt image yet, but I'm sure they'll be attractive as usual.

Kindest regards,

Rick

The following is an edited and modified version of The President’s Corner, February, 2015.

The information, though current, is still relevant today. Names have changed to reflect the situation.

The President's Corner, February, 2015...March, 2018

The subject for this corner is; CRS, (I’ll clean it up) Can’t Remember Stuff, or $45 Dues. Really?

I'm not sure if this is politically correct, I'm not sure if I am politically correct. Probably not. What I am is the President of CCC Legacy Chapter 123. With that said, I'd like to share a bit of information with all of you. Especially the members who enjoy the benefits, while not helping the chapter by paying the dues, required. A whole $15 a year.

To be a member of CCC Legacy Inc, which actually is a prerequisite of being a chapter member, is just $20 per year. That's just $45 a year to be a part of the finest organizations who, through education, and action, keep the legacy of the “Greatest Generation” and the Civilian Conservation Corps in the forefront of the conservation efforts initiated by the CCC, of the USA. Been to a state or federal park, lately? Chances are good, the CCC built that park. Makes no difference what state you are in. Forty five dollars a year? I don't care who you are, you spend more than that on just one evening meal with the family. Don't get me started on if you have a party at your house. Come on people. Really? $45 per year! I paid almost that much on just one prescription for my mother. It wasn't covered by insurance, but she needed it. You tell me you're on a fixed income. Unless one works on commission, we're all on a fixed income. Now we all know “the boys” are exempt, at the chapter level, and are LIFE members (no dues). If you are a LIFE member of CCC Legacy Inc, or have been identified by the chapter as a Life member, or Honorary Life Member, you also are exempt (no dues). You may be a widow of a boy. By action vote of the Executive Council in 2012, you are an Honorary Life member (no dues). A wife owes. All Life or Honorary Life members may donate to the continued operation of the chapter.

I can't come up with a reason why a “kid” of a boy would not pay just $45 a year, $15 to the chapter only, to keep there Dad's, Grand Dad's, Uncle's etc legacy alive. If you are not a kid, but believe in the ideas and ideals of the CCC, it's still just $45 a year to be a member of CCC Legacy Inc. and CCC Legacy Chapter 123. As I update the activities of the chapter you will see names throughout. If your name is included by mistake contact Joe Pixler, Secretary/Treasurer, musictothemaxx@att.net , 806-786-6299, or Mike Pixler, President RUAVET@aol.com ,

817-929-1557. Kathy Mays Smith, congratulations on your Honorary Life membership status. You have always represented CCC Legacy Chapter 123 in an outstanding manner. Thank you.

A special thank you to the Executive Council, and to the “anonymous donors” who continue to donate to the chapter. Anonymous donors continue to pay for someone who can pay their dues, but don't. That doesn't mean I agree with it or like it. The money is coming in so I guess I'll live with it. I know I'll make someone mad.

5

My actions should not make you mad, Dennis Greer, Jennifer Weger, your actions, or the lack of action Cam Coberly, Judy Coberly, Anna Crawford, should make you mad. I understand sometimes we just forget. Those of you who know me, know I suffer from a condition known as CRS. I'm sure we all suffer CRS at some point. Some call it having a senior’s moment, or brain stall, Blanche Howerton, Jim Rau, but what ever you call it, Dennis Mann, Kenneth Mann, Jeff McKee, it eventually passes. When it does, do the right thing, Bob Crow, Larka Tetens, Clair Radi, Benita C Reese, Dale Roberts, pay the dues. I do understand, Jane Smith, (Mike is a Life member) that we are all busy. Some of us rely on our kin to take care of these things, Josh Tetens, Goldie Vaughn, that's fine. Again, CRS rears its ugly head. But we do get over it, Maria Jo White, and Suzie Wingo. You will too. I know there's a number of you that are really mad by now. How dare you include me in such a writing, especially since I personally have not paid my dues for at least two years, Richard Brice, Marcia Doherty, Kathy Mann, Jim Elkins, but still receive the newsletter, in most cases.

Even though I have seen the numerous reminders in the newsletter and at the meetings, Bill Hollingsworth, Mary Williamson, Mickey Hooper, Cynthia White Wolley, I choose to ignore them and let someone else pay my way, NOTE; The chapter will authorize the paying of one’s dues by some else on a case by case basis. Barbara Myers LaDonna Fruge Perkins, LaVonne Walter and Dwain White. Don't get excited by this writing. Again, I do understand CRS and relationships and the like. But we do get over it and eventually move on.

I probably have missed someone. Contact Joe or me, to renew, if I did. Quite a number who will have an opportunity to make this right when you receive the newsletter one last time. Should you decide not to renew for some reason, at least contact someone in the chapter and let them know so we or they can stop paying your way. There are some that will not be receiving the newsletter and will not be physically at the next meeting, 14 April, 2018. Theirs is the only understandable and acceptable reason for not paying their dues. Many already have. Thank you, Al Clement, Curtis Greer, Willie Pixler, Herman Elliot, Houston Fruge, GE Pixler, Norbert Gebhard, Ernest Hubbard, James Chandler, James Green, Harry Steinart, WO Penick, Verle Orindorff, Dan Small, Eugene Singleton, Ben F Yung, Jim Lyde, Charles Varro, Bob Nettles, Claude Tyler, Truman Pixler, Richard Crooks, Joe Minshew, Merle Timblin, Morris Taylor, Claude Tyler, Larkin Dilbeck, Rusty Rodgers, TW Bill McKee, Albert Scott Frank Polenta, and Hubert Foster.

These men I knew personally as one of the “boys” or members of the chapter. Let's not forget the ladies of the chapter and wives of the boys, Tennie Mae, Helene, Lillie, Terry, Lee, Fay, Ruby, and Kathy. Other boys include, Nelson Oats, George Payne, William Oakley, Harold Trammell, Harold Ballard, and WO Mullin.

Where are the “kids” of these members? All need to join. Some have, some have not. Again, I don't know why not. CRS, or $45 dues, I guess.

The following is a poem by CCC Legacy Chapter 123, Poet Laureate, Jack Bragg. From time to time Jack would recite a poem, written by him, about the CCC. Some titled, some not. Enjoy the following verses…...Thanks Jack.

I have looked in the trees

waded water above my knees

Climbed many power poles

Wore out my shoe soles

Do you have a dance Saturday night

I will be there to set things right

As this story goes

The CC boy never shows

He was sent to a forest fire afar

So far you would need a car

The CC boy had not broke any law

Just lonely missing Ma and Pa

A pet possum and a one eyed cat

Sal is the only thought now under his hat.

Jack Bragg

January 12, 2018

To Mike, Wes and the "boys"

Dad always looked forward to either my sister or I taking him to a Chapter meeting to visit with "the boys" and their ladies.  So I am sure he would have been happy to know that Mike showed up at his Funeral visitation to provide an official "send off" from the boys.  Dad had a goal to make it to 100 but even though he was in good health he was getting really tired of life without mom and few friends.  He said his goodbyes and that he was ready to go be with mom and his Savior.  He was in no pain when he went to sleep and drifted away after my sister arrived that morning to check on him.  He was 8 days short of his 98th birthday when he drifted away on Sunday, Nov 5.  As usual, Dad had a plan.  We were able to bury him the following Saturday, Nov 11, Veterans Day, 2017.

When Mike came to the visitation I asked how best to celebrate Dad's love for Legacy Chapter 123?  We discussed a donation in dad's name to the Chapter.  I tried to do so using the Chapter website "Donate Button" but it appears that my PayPal account canceled the donation (twice) so the link may be broken or appear suspect to PayPal.  So you will have to deal with my "$100 check is in the mail promise".

Thanks also to Mike for putting me in touch with Wes the first time I was driving around Lake Worth helping dad find the CCC Memorial.  Dad was a little confused with the message he had gotten, as we were looking on the wrong side of the lake near where dad lived and where I grew up.  But dad had faith in the Chapter, he said, "Here call Mike at this phone number and get us some directions!!!!"  Of course, Mike answered and said, "I was there this morning, mowing grass, if I had known you were coming I would have waited. 4

When we finally got to the right place following Mike's directions we were greeted by Wes who apparently had been contacted by Mike to come greet us.  Wes spent a long time that afternoon showing us around, explaining what was known about the camp and talking with dad.  Wes did an excellent job of "interviewing" dad, slowly drawing out long forgotten memories of dad's time at the CCC camp. Dad said when he arrived at the camp on his first day they were short handed in the kitchen and he helped out.  He must have done a good job because the kitchen became his assignment.  Somehow that must have gotten into his records because a few years later after he was drafted for WWII he was trained as a cook.  He said his only duty as a cook was on the ship over because once he got to France his sergeant said, "I don't need no stinking cook, I need a 50 cal machine gun operator, jump in the back of that half-track and meet your new best friend, Mr 50 Cal."

Of course Dad's most vivid memory of CCC camp was when a buddy invited dad to go home with him for the weekend to meet his buddy's girl friend and her sister.  The two of them wound up as brothers-in-law in addition to friends when the two couples married several years later.  The four of them were going to get married together but fate and muddy country farm roads changed that a little when they got stuck on the way to get married.  They talked it over and decided that one couple would get out and push so that one couple could stay clean for the ceremony.  Mom and Dad got out to push, Al & Dorothy stayed clean and got married with Mom and Dad as muddy witnesses. The next day Mom and Dad got cleaned up and went back to get married (on Halloween).  So we heard the story often when someone would ask why in the world Mom and Dad chose Halloween for their wedding day and subsequent anniversary celebrations. Actually it was necessary as the guys had taken a week off from their new jobs at Lockheed in Burbank, rushed back to Texas to get married so they could take the girls back to Burbank with them.  Grandpa and their brothers would not hear of the girls going off to California with the guys unless they were married.  My goodness,  how times have changed.

After mom passed in 2009, it took dad a while to find his way without mom at his side.  Legacy Chapter 123 was a big help to dad as he worked through that part of his new life as a widower.  Hopefully the Chapter realizes how important it is to fill that function for other "boys" as time moves on.

5

Bless you all,

Tom R McKee,

Midlothian, Virginia

Thank you Tom for the donation and sharing a Dad’s story with us. We all enjoyed talking with him at the meetings. You are always welcome at CCC Legacy Chapter 123.
